Peace Corps chairman, Dickson Akoh caught cheating in exam hall

With President Muhammadu Buhari yet to sign the Peace Corps Bill, the founder of the Nigeria Peace Coprs, Dr. Dickson Akor, has been linked with examination malpractice mess.

He was allegedly caught cheating in a postgraduate examination at the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA).

Akor who currently acts as the Commandant-General of the Peace Corps is being investigated by the authorities of the university over the matter, The AUTHORITY learnt.

When journalists contacted Akor in Abuja, he waved the issue aside and accused them wanting to extort him.

Akor is at present undergoing a Master’s Degree programme in Sociology Department in the Faulty of Social Sciences of the university.

Trouble started during the last semester examination when it a visiting lecturer from Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Dr. Karim Aliyu, allegedly caught Ako cheating in the Statistics test.

Some students confirmed the development and claimed that Akor threatened to deal with the visiting lecturer if he dared to expose him and dent his image.

In a swift reaction, the university promised that justice would be done in the case, stressing that the ivory tower does not treat such weighty allegations on the basis of status of any student in the society.

The visiting lecturer, Dr. Karim Aliyu, said that he had sent his report to the school’s authorities for consideration and referred our correspondent to the university’s management for details.

He said: “I cannot comment on that issue publicly for now. I have sent my report to University of Abuja. I was just a visiting lecturer and whatever transpired during my stay in the university has been communicated to the relevant authorities. Whatever they (university authorities) want to do with the report is none of my business. Go to the university and get the details.”

UNIABUJA spokesperson, Mr. Waziri, said that he is not aware of the matter, stressing that the case hadnot reached the University Senate for consideration.

He said: “Honestly, I am not aware of the matter. I am sure, it is still at the departmental level and I cannot speak for the department. It is better you confirm from the department.”.

The Head of Sociology Department, Prof. Suleiman Mohammed, said that the university authorities would not treat issues relating to examination malpractice with levity.

“First, let me commend you for your patience and maturity. When you called me last week, I was in Sokoto for a training programme and I promised to see you when I return to Abuja. Unfortunately, I don’t know how to help you in this matter because the university is an organised system.

“We have structures in the university system and issues relating to examination misconduct are treated step by step. I don’t know why Waziri referred you to the department because he is the spokesperson for the university and it will not be wise for us to speak differently.

“Second, I want to assure you that in the university, we don’t treat our students on the basis of status in society. We see everybody as a student and not a big man in society. Therefore, the fear that the case you are referring to will be treated unfairly is not true. All cases of alleged examination misconduct have been sent to the relevant body and until the outcome of their investigation, all those involved are still suspects,” Mohammed stressed.

When our correspondent contacted Akor on phone, on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 6.36pm, he said three journalists have already called him on the same issue, but that it was just to extort money from him.

He insisted that any inquiry on examination malpractice should be directed to the university authorities.

Akor, however said that he was in Makurdi preparing for Peace Corps conference and that the correspondent should call him the follwing week when he would have returned to Abuja.

He was called again on May 22 at 4: 13 pm, he did not pick his calls. Several other calls made were not responded to by him.
