2019 ELECTIONS: Those who sell their votes are selling democracy — Abubakar

A convener of the Not Too Young Run movement in Gombe state and gubernatorial hopeful, Aliyu Abubakar, has urged youths and Nigerians to avoid selling their votes to desperate politicians.

Speaking at a grand rally on Sunday in Gombe, Haidar said the rally was organized to create awareness on the #NotTooYoungToRun law and also encourage all young people seeking elective positions to freely exercise their constitutionally guaranteed rights and privileges within the ambits of the law.

The gubernatorial hopeful described votes buying as uncivil and a threat to democracy.

“Selling your votes is like selling ones conscience and rights, that is why I decided to mobilise the youths to sensitise them on the need to be careful against being used as agents of vote buying by desperate politician,” he said.

Haidar also admonished the youths not to reduce running for office to sharing money but make sure they participate by voting according to their conscience, stressing that Nigerian youths must get it right for the progress and development of the country.

He added that he is widely consulting on the political party to contest for the governorship seat come 2019.

“It is time for the youths to wake up and resist the temptation of being used as political thugs and agents of destruction by politicians that would dump them as soon as they win the election,” Haidar added.
